A groundbreaking partnership on both sides. Together, MORFO and Future Climate aim to combine their expertise to meet the growing demand for reforestation-based carbon credits, while also investing in innovation to scale up environmental restoration efforts. The initial phase of this experimental project kicks off this week at Fazenda do Jacarandás, a Mata Atlântica area in São Paulo state, with plans to expand to 1,100 hectares as part of the larger Rio Preto project in a future phase.
“This marks MORFO’s first foray into the carbon market,” said Adrien Pages, CEO of MORFO, a company already developing projects in sectors like mining, pulp and paper, agriculture, and public initiatives. Future Climate, a climate business group with extensive experience in REDD+ projects, is embarking on its first ARR (Afforestation, Reforestation, and Restoration) initiative. “We’re thrilled to join forces with MORFO in this pioneering partnership, combining innovation and technical expertise in forest engineering,” said Marcelo Haddad, Reforestation Director at Future Climate.
On one side, Future Climate contributes its expertise in carbon project development. On the other, MORFO brings innovation to the table. The greentech company has developed and patented a unique large-scale reforestation methodology with four steps: soil analysis, species selection, encapsulated seed planting, and monitoring. The use of drones during the planting stage allows coverage of up to 50 hectares per day with a two-person team, cutting costs by up to 50% on large areas. Field results from an experimental project in southern Bahia confirmed lab-tested results, including an 80% species success rate and a density of over 1,000 seeds per hectare. This approach ensures alignment with the project’s carbon curves, optimizing carbon capture for certification under standards like VERRA. “Beyond scalability, a critical element in global reforestation efforts, this method reduces the break-even point to three years, significantly cutting costs,” added Pages.
The Rio Preto project aims to restore 3,000 hectares, starting with 1,100 hectares of degraded land using native Amazon and Cerrado species. The restored forest will also help rehabilitate natural water courses and enhance soil retention. Another expected outcome is the return of biodiversity to the area. “This partnership could be a turning point for forest restoration, enabling projects that are not only environmentally sustainable but also economically viable, a key factor in scaling restoration efforts nationwide,” Pages concluded.
Marcelo Haddad emphasized the transformational potential of this partnership for forest restoration and carbon credit generation. “By optimizing planning and execution in the field, this collaboration will make restoration faster and more efficient. Drone planting enables restoration of hard-to-access areas, reduces operational costs, and increases the effectiveness of large-scale reforestation projects, enhancing carbon removal potential through vegetation growth. Our goal is for this partnership to set a transformative example for the reforestation sector, opening new horizons for this growing demand,” Haddad explained.
About MORFO
Founded in 2021 by Adrien Pages, Hugo Asselin, and Pascal Asselin, the Franco-Brazilian startup MORFO has developed and patented a unique large-scale reforestation method in four steps: soil analysis, seed selection and encapsulation in the lab, drone-based seed dispersal, and project monitoring. The aim is to fully and sustainably restore forest ecosystems to combat climate change and protect biodiversity. In Brazil, MORFO collaborates with academic partners like UFSCar and UFV and NGOs such as Grupo Ambiental Natureza Bela and Instituto Terra, as well as networks of seed collectors, amplifying its positive social impact by valuing local knowledge and workforce development. To date, MORFO has restored 1,200 hectares of forest, earned recognition from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Google, and Solar Impulse.
